"Winterize" Your Pets in Cold Weather

Baby- it's COLD outside! And not just for you, for your pets too!
Just because your animals have a "fur coat"- it doesn't make them immune to extreme cold weather temperatures.

But if you are inclined to purchase coats, sweaters or other cold weather gear for your pets, be sure of several things.

1. Make sure the article of clothing FITS- make sure it's not too tight or too loose. It has to be "just right."

2. Never outfit your pet with an article with loose hanging strings or other items that could get caught or stuck in your yard or places your pets play.

3. Be especially cautious that the constrain the pet's neck or ability to walk or run.

4. Of course it's a matter of course, but be sure your pet's shots are up to date.

5. If you have an older pet or one that suffers from joint or hip pain, ask your vet if a pet supplement like MSM or glucosamine chondroitan would be beneficial.

6. Pay particular attention to your pet's coat. Winter weather dries out their skin (just like yours). You may want to use a special moisturizing shampoo and conditioning during the winter season.

If YOU have any winter weather pet tips, please feel free to comment and make YOUR suggestions!

And PLEASE- donate to your local humane society or shelter. Donate you time and talents. Walk a dog! You'll enjoy the exercise as well! And best of all- please ADOPT A PET!

Lots of love from a Rescue Dog!

Spring has arrived in the North Georgia Mountains- and boy does this dog LOVE IT!

But with Spring comes the time of year that ticks and fleas come back- so I just wanted to remind you to be sure that YOUR pets are properly groomed for the warmer weather, shots are up-to-date and flea and tick medications are applied. And don't forget that heart worm medication!

I look forward to meeting many of you soon!

Pet Stories from Harriet Carter's Friends, Family, Real Estate Clients and Customers!

Click the Title of this post to view the Forsyth County Georgia Humane Society's Newsletter "Pet of The Month"

A longtime friend and customer's of Harriet's is "Miss Mariah."
She has been a longtime member, supporter and volunteer at the the Forsyth County Humane Society. Here is a picture of her youngest rescue" - Honeybear!

Mariah writes:

Dear Miss Gracie,

Honeybear is a 21 month old pup who is a Forsyth County
Humane Society rescue. He was found in a barn with no
sibs and no mother - so young he had to be hand-fed by
a human. We think he's maybe Golden Retriever-Irish
Wolfhound breeding. He just loves all doggies (any
age or size), all kitties (also any age or size), and
all humans, with no preferences. He's great on a
leash, except when he really wants to go investigate
something (usually another doggie). Then he's like
holding onto a freight train. He's a great member of
my family! I'll bring him to introduce you all sometime
soon. MM

Thank you so much for your good work, Miss Mariah. Harriet and I - and ALL of our animal loving friends salute you and appreciate your good work helping the strays and promoting spaying and neutering so that we can have less abandoned, neglected and over-populated puppies, dogs, cats and kittens.

It's Flea and TICK Season! North Georgia Mountains

There ain't no BUGS on ME!
With the pretty spring weather in these beautiful North Georgia Mountains- brings all those "bugs"- and the WORST are ticks and fleas (on You or ME!)

Ticks carry Lyme Disease to you humans- so be sure to check your dog or cat DAILY for "critters"- especially if they lounge and sleep in the bed or in the couch with you (like I do!)

(Lyme Disease is VERY bad- and causes a serious muscular disease- similar to M.S.)

My Mom got me some very effective "Zodiac" brand Flea and Tick Shampoo. She was very careful around my eyes and was very sure to only leave it on for 3-4 minutes, because it's strong medicine that soaks right into the skin. (Plus, I had the irresistible urge to lick at it on my muzzle).
After I was all dried and combed- she applied the monthly "Cutter's Flea and Tick" treatment. A few dabs between my eyes, ears and under my chin- then a long stroke down my back!
Another good product for Tick and Ear Mites- is Sargeant's "Vetscription". It's water based and it smells like baby powder! Yum!
It sure feels good to have no bugs on me!
And Mom appreciates it, too.
So take your furry friends and head out to PetSmart - or any other "Pet Friendly" shopping spot for animals.
You will be glad you did! So will Your HUMANS!!!
Enjoy the Spring Weather !
Gracie
P.S. The weather is getting warmer- and if your pet likes to takes rides in the car (like I LOVE to do) PLEASE don't leave them in the vehicle too long, park in the shade and remember to crack the windows!
It gets so hot so quickly in cars and trucks- plus we have fur coats!
The heat can "bake" our little brains very quickly.
So please- take care of your special passengers! They are depending on YOU!
